Amazon ordered a total of 20 new electric trucks from Volvo. The brand’s initiative, called “The Climate Pledge,” continues Amazon’s carbon-neutral goal.
In addition to the large heavy-duty electric trucks, the company also ordered 100,000 Rivian electric delivery vans. Rivian is also a company that Amazon has heavily invested in prior to making the huge order. According to Electrek.
Also, the source mentioned that more electric vehicles are on the way to Amazon in the near future in order to accelerate its transition to fully-electric vehicles. It’s also known that the company has ordered 1,800 Mercedes-Benz electric vans, and also 10 electric trucks from a lesser-known brand, Lion Electric.
The model that Amazon is going with from Volvo is the Volvo FH Electric, of which there will be 20 on the way to the company for use in its logistics network across its operations.
“Volvo Trucks will deliver fully electric heavy-duty trucks to Amazon in Germany by year-end. The 20 Volvo FH Electric are expected to drive more than one million road [kilometers] annually, fuelled with electricity instead of diesel.” As Volvo’s press release writes.
As for the specifications, Volvo claims that the FH Electric can hold up to 44 tons of Gross Carrying Weight (GCW) and their trucks offer operators a range of up to 300 kilometers before needing a charge. All of this comes from a 540 kiloWatt-hour battery with a power output of 490 kiloWatts. The truck can also be “topped up” and have its battery quickly charged over a lunch break, and by doing so it can cover more ground, up to 500 kilometers in total.
“Big actors in the transport business play a key role in leading the industry’s efforts to lower its carbon footprint. Therefore I´m glad that Amazon is working with us to help reduce their emissions in longer and heavier transport assignments”
These trucks will be expected to operate across Europe and attend to Amazon’s logistical needs in the continent.
