In 2022 in Columbus, Indiana, Cummins announced that its current goal is to help fleets in North America and around the world transition to more environmentally friendly transportation options. Now, Cummins has revealed another major-stepping stone in the realization of that goal with the release of its all-new X10 Fuel-Agnostic engine.

Engineers over at Cummins say that the new X10 is poised to replace both the L9 and X12 engines in both medium- and heavy-duty applications. They also added that the new engine will be compliant with U.S. EPA’s 2027 regulations a year in advance.

The brand is releasing a diesel-powered version of the X10 first, with other versions utilizing other fuel types coming to the U.S. market later. The 10-liter power unit slots into Cummins’ product lineup alongside the B6.7 and X15, serving vocational, transit, pickup and delivery, and regional haul customers.

“We are committed to advancing diesel technology while our markets and our customers need it to run their businesses. The new X10 has been designed drawing on our decades of experience as a leader in the medium and heavy-duty space.”

According to Samperio, the X10 comes with the ratings and reliability to complete the toughest jobs, and continues on to say that diesel fuel and diesel engines will remain a critical technology for the commercial vehicle market for years to come and that Cummins will continue to support those markets and applications as long as necessary.

Cummins says that the X10 diesel will emit 75% less Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) than required when it launches in 2026. The new diesel engine will also be compliant with the U.S. EPA’s 2027 regulations while providing additional changes in fuel economy improvement. The X10 features a belt-driven, high-output 48-volt alternator and after-treatment heater solution developed for increasingly stringent emissions standards and will also be able to incorporate other advanced combustion technologies.

The new X10 engine is built on Cummins’ freshly developed fuel-agnostic engine platform. This new platform features a series of engine versions that are derived from a common base engine, which means that parts between other engine versions can be used interchangeably. To be more specific, engine components below the head gasket will have largely similar components while parts above the head gaskets will have different components for different fuel types. Each engine version will operate using a different, single, fuel type.

Samperio added that Europe and North America will be the first regions to get the new X10 engine. Cummins will introduce the X10 engine to other regions over time and will eventually be engineered for off-highway markets as well.

Right now, the Philippines is also in desperate need of cleaner diesel engines in the market so having the X10 engine here is a welcome prospect. However, with the X10’s release slated for 2026 in Europe and North America, it will be a bit of time before Cummins will bring this into the Philippines if they bring it over at all.
