Daimler Truck has kicked off customer trials for its Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck, which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, to see how these trucks perform under real-life conditions. The trials are happening in Germany and involve big names like Air Products, Amazon, Holcim, INEOS Inovyn, and Wiedmann & Winz. These companies will use these trucks in their daily operations, providing Daimler with valuable insights into how the trucks handle real-world demands.
These GenH2 trucks are built similarly to the well-known Mercedes-Benz Actros truck but are equipped with advanced hydrogen technology. They come with a cell centric fuel cell system that delivers 300 kW of power and a strong torque of up to 2,071 Nm, ideal for heavy loads. There's also a large 400 kW battery that provides extra power when needed, such as during acceleration or climbing hills. The battery gets its charge from braking energy and extra power from the fuel cell, making the system efficient.
During the trial, these trucks will be tested across Germany for different transport tasks. They will be refueled at hydrogen stations in Woerth am Rhein and soon in Duisburg. With a payload capacity of about 25 tons and a gross combination weight of 40 tons, these trucks are developed for long-distance hauls, capable of traveling more than 1,000 kilometers on a single hydrogen fill-up.
The point of testing these trucks is to make sure they're up for the tasks they need to do and to find out what needs to be improved before they start making lots of them. Daimler Truck wants to make these hydrogen trucks even better so they can meet the needs of future clean transport.
