The development of new GIGA and Quon heavy-duty tractor models for the Japanese market has been jointly announced by Isuzu Motors and UD Trucks.
Since UD Trucks' entry into the Isuzu Group in April 2021, the new tractor models will become the first jointly developed products by the two companies. These models have gone on sale since April 4 through the respective sales networks of each company.
By collaborating on this development, Isuzu and UD Trucks say they have combined their respective technologies to achieve a higher load capacity by reducing engine size, improving drivability, and enhancing safety features. These efforts aim to tackle challenges encountered by the industry, including addressing driver shortages and enhancing driver working conditions. The rigors of long-distance truck driving are a real issue that goes unnoticed, so introducing trucks that improve the quality of work conditions for drivers is a welcome sight in the industry.
Isuzu and UD Trucks currently manage a commercial vehicle service network of over 400 dealers in Japan. Additionally, the two companies are intensifying their collaborative efforts, including the joint utilization of domestic and overseas parts warehouses, joint procurement and delivery of spare parts, and the establishment of a joint office in Singapore to reinforce their overseas business operations.
"Today we are very pleased to announce jointly developed tractor models. Since UD Trucks joined Isuzu Group, we have continued to foster a culture of mutual understanding with an emphasis on creating new value. By deepening our collaboration, we will work to address logistics challenges facing our industry and accelerate the future of transport.”
Takashi Oodaira, the Managing Executive of Isuzu added, "Our product range at Isuzu encompasses small, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles as well as buses. Additionally, we possess a wealth of knowledge regarding our customers' usage of our vehicles and their requirements. By maximizing developmental efficiencies and leveraging the strengths of both companies, we will continue to offer transport solutions to our customers."
Meanwhile, Douglas Nakano, the Senior Vice President of Technology and Chief Technology Officer of UD Trucks, stated, "Joining the Isuzu Group has enabled us to return to the 6x4 tractor segment after being absent for 13 years. As a member of the Isuzu Group, we will persist in developing heavy-duty vehicles that cater to the customers' requirements."
Both companies promise to further develop their collaboration in their shared pursuit of accelerating the future of transport.
