Back in March, Isuzu unveiled a hydrogen-powered version of the Giga heavy-duty truck that came as a result of a joint collaboration. Now that the 2023 Japanese Mobility Show is upon us, Isuzu says that it will be unveiling this cutting-edge truck for the first time there. During the reveal, Isuzu will also take the time to explain and guide people through the inner workings of fuel cell technology.
In a collaborative effort between the two Japanese automakers, Isuzu contributed its Giga heavy-duty truck expertise, while Honda dedicated its efforts to developing a hydrogen-fueled fuel-cell technology system for the truck's powertrain. With this fuel-cell powertrain boasting zero CO2 emissions, both Isuzu and Honda are confident that this hydrogen-powered system is perfectly suited for trucks intended to transport heavy loads over extensive distances during prolonged operational hours.
In addition to its carbon-neutral performance, this environmentally friendly heavy-duty truck significantly reduces noise and vibration, aligning perfectly with Isuzu's ambitious goal of fostering a carbon-neutral society. Isuzu is actively striving to eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the entire lifecycle of its products and minimize direct GHG emissions from its business operations by the year 2050.
The collaboration between the two companies started in January 2020. This came after signing an agreement to jointly explore fuel cell-based powertrains for heavy-duty trucks, Isuzu and Honda have diligently laid the groundwork for this innovative endeavor. This foundation encompasses vital elements such as adapting fuel cell technology for heavy-duty trucks and advancing vehicle control systems. As a significant step forward in their collaborative journey, the companies are gearing up to commence real-world testing of a prototype truck on public roads before the close of the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2024.
It will be quite some time before the Giga Feul Cell hits the road as a production model. Regarding Isuzu's timeline for introducing a production version, the automaker is targeting a launch date of 2027.
