Mitsubishi Fuso introduces an autonomous garbage truck that follows its driver

Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation has introduced a new concept in waste management with the eCanter Sensor Collect, a garbage truck equipped with autonomous technology. Presented in Kawasaki, Japan, the truck makes urban sanitation better by following its driver automatically from one collection point to the next.

The truck uses Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), using cameras mounted at the front and rear to track the driver’s movements. These cameras allow the truck to follow the driver who walks ahead to various garbage collection points, which eliminates the need for the driver to continually enter and exit the vehicle, thereby improving efficiency and reducing physical exertion. While not fully autonomous, the level of technology is kind of fair for the truck's operations, which involve following a set route at low speeds.

Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) equip the truck to handle different situations around the city safely. The system is made to detect pedestrians and other vehicles, automatically applying brakes or driving around obstacles to prevent accidents, making it safe even when put on a busy street.

Another high-tech feature of the eCanter Sensor Collect is its garbage information sharing system, which assesses the weight, volume, and number of items disposed of, sending this data to central facilities to optimize operations, improving overall efficiency and contributing to the environmental goals of reducing CO2 emissions in garbage collection activities.

The project, supported by the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center (JESC), pursues to explore ways to decrease CO2 emissions and increase the efficiency of garbage collection. Mitsubishi Fuso plans to continue these trials and demonstrations through 2024, developing the technology for future electric vehicle trucks. The eCanter Sensor Collect is based on the production model of the eCanter and features a lithium-ion battery with a total vehicle weight of 6.4 tons. The revamped version builds on the initial model first created in 2020.
