Isuzu has decided to extend the application of its advanced driver assist system, the Smart Duo Cam, to its light-duty truck, the Elf, or the N-Series as we know it here in the Philippines. Though we’re quite used to hearing about advanced driver aids (ADAS) in passenger vehicles, this move by Isuzu might mean we will be seeing more of these active safety systems in commercial vehicles in the near future.
Initially introduced in Isuzu's passenger vehicle lineup, which includes models like the D-MAX and mu-X, the Smart Duo Cam is a sophisticated system designed to replicate the human eyes' depth perception. This camera system has a 120-degree wide-angle perspective, complemented by a millimeter-wave radar. This combination enables Collision Mitigation Braking (CMB) at intersections and on single-track roads. Functioning akin to autonomous emergency braking, the system automatically engages the brakes using sensor data to assist drivers in preventing potential collisions.
In a collaborative effort, Hitachi Astemo and Isuzu joined forces to create the CMB system specifically tailored for trucks. Aided by Isuzu's expertise in commercial vehicles, Hitachi Astemo carefully considered truck-specific scenarios and necessary specifications to successfully implement collision mitigation braking technology.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism in Japan is advocating the compulsory implementation of collision mitigation braking systems not only in passenger cars but also in commercial vehicles like trucks.
According to a report conducted by the Ministry in 2021, despite a gradual decline in truck-related accidents over the years, a concerning statistic reveals that 60 percent of fatal accidents involving pedestrians take place on single-track roads, while 40 percent occur during right or left turns at intersections. This data highlights the necessity for collision mitigation systems with a broad field of view that can account for these areas. To put it simply, eyes on the backs of drivers' heads are not enough to reduce accidents on the road.
Since 2021, Isuzu has successfully introduced N-series trucks equipped with ADAS features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning, and Auto High Beam in the Australian market. The Philippines has yet to see trucks equipped with advanced driver aids, however, this development in Isuzu’s line gives a glimmer of hope that more advanced commercial vehicles will soon come to our shores.
