Most know Scania for its capable trucks and buses, including models from the G-SeriesCITYWIDE range, and more, but few might discover that the Swedish company has also been working on electrifying its business.

A few weeks ago, Scania debuted a new regional long-haul electric truck primarily for the European market. It will be available both in rigid truck and tractor-trailer configurations.

Available in a 4x2 layout, the new electric truck features six batteries totaling 624 kWh and delivers up to 350 km of range at an average speed of 80 km/h on highways. Scania notes that the range will vary based on load, configuration, and driving conditions.

What’s even more impressive is that the battery-electric truck can achieve a full charge in less than 90 minutes. Charging for only an hour can reportedly add up to 300 km or range. The new Scania R-series and S-series trucks are powered by a 410 kW electric motor.

In Europe, truck drivers are required to have a 45-minute rest period for every 4.5 hours behind the wheel. While the truck’s charging time doesn’t exactly fall into the mandated rest period, it’s still an impressive figure that should only go down as battery technology peaks in the coming years.

Electric trucks are a growing industry in Europe, where brands like Scania and Volvo Trucks are currently competing to become the dominant player. Last year, Volvo led the pack with a massive 42% market share. With its latest regional long-haul electric truck, Scania hopes to change that.
