It's out with the old and in with the new—environmentally speaking. Following the adoption of the Euro 5 diesel standard in Thailand at the start of the year, there has been a notable increase in the sales of Euro 5-compliant passenger buses. Scania Siam Ltd., a leader in the industry, reported that its New Bus Generation Euro 5 model, introduced in March, quickly sold out, pointing out the market's quick adjustment to the new environmental regulations.
Prot Chotinant, the sales manager of Scania Siam Ltd., reports that approximately 70% of their new Euro 5 bus sales were to public transport operators, with 20% to tour guides and 10% to factories requiring staff transport solutions. Chotinant adds that the environmental benefits of upgrading to Euro 5 diesel, which emits far lower levels of harmful pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter compared to its predecessors. These pollutants are known for their adverse health impacts, including respiratory and heart diseases.
“Business entrepreneurs realised that Euro 5 buses are in line with their environmental policies. Many of their clients also set Euro 5 certification as one of the contract prerequisites, therefore choosing appropriate buses could increase business’ competitiveness.”
Businesses are increasingly adopting Euro 5 buses to comply with environmental policies and meet contractual requirements that mandate lower emissions, increasing their competitive advantage. Additionally, government agencies have updated their vehicle procurement specifications to include Euro 5 standards, further driving demand for this.
Globally, as sustainable tourism gains attention, several countries now mandate that tour buses comply with Euro 5 standards. According to Chotinant, this change is likely to influence future vehicle demand within the tourism sector. Scania's latest Euro 5 model not only reduces environmental impact but also improves fuel efficiency by 8% compared to earlier models.
