Driving a bus in the Philippines has got to be one of the most stressful jobs out there. Each time a driver goes to ply their routes, they come face to face with numerous situations that require fast reflexes and a good eye to observe the road. NLEX Corporation recognizes how eyesight is important for our “tsupers” and they have mobilized a program called “See Clearly, Drive Safely” to provide free eyecare.
NLEX Corporation, in collaboration with Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Cardinal Medical Charities Foundation Inc., and Executive Optical, offered complimentary eye care services to more than 100 bus drivers hailing from Luzon and Metro Manila through its "See Clearly, Drive Safely" eye care initiative. These services included free consultations, visual accuracy assessments, refraction tests, and screenings for eye diseases to benefit members of the Nagkakaisang Samahan ng Nangagasiwa ng Panlalawigang Bus sa Pilipinas Inc (NSNPBPI).
“The program shows our commitment to making roads safe for everyone because good eyesight is critical to safe driving. By fostering good eye care, we will be able to protect the lives of the drivers and motorists as better vision guarantees safer travel.”
The primary objective of the "See Clearly, Drive Safely" initiative is to enhance road safety on NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector by emphasizing the significance of excellent vision for drivers while they are navigating the roads.
Apart from receiving complimentary eye consultations, the NSNPBPI bus drivers were further supplied with free eye drops, reading glasses, and prescription eyewear during the two-day event. Additionally, those drivers in need of cataract surgery can access free treatment and surgical procedures, facilitated by volunteer doctors from Cardinal Santos Medical Center.
Alex Yague, the executive director of NSNPBPI, expressed the group's gratitude for the program, stating, "I am thankful to NLEX and Cardinal Santos Medical Center for their eye care clinic that will help our drivers. I hope that such a program will continue."
Yague acknowledged the significance of promoting good eyesight and encouraged fellow members to participate in the program, emphasizing its importance for their safety and the safety of other motorists.
Commenced in 2017, the program has provided assistance to more than 750 transport drivers belonging to the Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines (PBOAP), NSNPBPI, and the NLEX-SCTEX host communities.
