Unveiled at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, the Toyota Rangga Concept is the closest we’ll get right now to a preview of the returning Tamaraw. Toyota showcased various iterations of the Rangga Concept, including the Rangga Concept Mobile Café, Rangga Concept Ambulance, Rangga Concept EV Mobile Service, and Rangga Concept campervan, effectively illustrating the diverse potential applications of this platform. These body styles aim to showcase the flexibility of the Rangga concept, a trait to watch out for if you’re a business owner looking for a light mover.
Toyota has not disclosed further information about the Rangga concept which is why a wagon body is yet to be seen amongst the single-cab concepts. Featuring a pickup truck-inspired layout and a robust body-on-frame build, Toyota says that the Rangga Concept is engineered for durability, and prepared to tackle a wide array of tasks. If you’re curious about the name, "Rangga" draws its inspiration from the Javanese word "Ronggo," signifying a resilient and powerful hero-like figure. Judging by its looks, Toyota has chosen the right name for this concept car with its chisel-jawed front fascia, and simple, utilitarian body.
Over in Indonesia, Toyota has initiated a competition inviting individuals to craft designs of the potential incarnations of the Rangga. Furnishing a template as a starting point, artists are granted the freedom to personalize the vehicle according to their imagination. Featured in the showcased collection are instances are the aforementioned ambulance and a camper rendition. Winning designs will be treated to a generous cash prize according to Toyota’s contest regulations.
If you may remember, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has confirmed that it will be investing P4.4 billion in the local production of the new Tamaraw. With the Rangga Concept breaking cover in Indonesia, the question about the Tamaraw’s return is no longer if, but when. Engine options aren’t out yet but according to TMP President Okamoto Atsuhiro, we can expect a cleaner diesel engine to be fitted on the upcoming Tamaraw.
