Volvo announced a while back that its plant was in Ghent, Belgium. The factory will be ready to start producing battery modules by the year 2025.
"The investment decision to install battery module manufacturing capacity in Ghent is another important step for the Volvo Group to shape its future value chain for battery systems."
According to the Volvo Group, the new manufacturing plant will be able to use battery cells from partners and from another planned battery cell plant located in Sweden.
As for the establishment progress on the plant, Volvo stated that the plant has started, and the first step of the module manufacturing process took an investment of €75 million EUR or the equivalent of $75.09 million USD. As for the full investment figure, Volvo did not disclose the total amount.
The new facility will span a total area of 12,000 square meters. The plant will be filled with an almost fully automated production process said Volvo.
Volvo’s investing in its ambitions. The company wants to have at least 35% of vehicles sold in 2030 to be electric, and its new plants will be there to answer the future demand. The brand is already building fully-electric trucks in its Gothenburg plant in Sweden.
By next year, 2023, the Ghent factory will also be ready to manufacture its electric FH series and more models to come. Volvo is gearing up for the electric revolution, and as the best-selling electric truck brand in Europe, it’s in a good position to maintain its lead as we all get closer to the EU deadline for zero-emission vehicles.
Time will tell if other manufacturers will step up to the plate and invest more money into zero-emission truck technology, but Volvo appears to be the most proactive given the company’s numerous investments in the space.
